TELT is the binational public promoter responsible for the realisation and operation of the cross-border section of the freight and passenger Lyon-Turin railway line. Founded in 2015 by the Italian and French governments, the company coordinates the design and construction of the 65 km of railway, with the Mont Cenis base tunnel.

The Collège des Ingénieurs is a multinational institution founded in 1986 and based in Paris, München, Torino. Our education philosophy is based on Learning through Action.

We believe engineers and scientists will play a significant role in the ‘innovation to market’ business revolution.

If I had to define the Lyon-Turin project, the word that would come to my mind is Adventure. Not only because it will be the longest railway tunnel in the world, but because it will change the geography of Europe forever. In addition, it is also an adventure of the Spirit, towards the unknown, like all great works, and we must prove ourselves worthy of it.

Mario Virano, 2021

Mario Virano has been the general director of TELT since its foundation in 2015. He dedicated more than 20 years to the new Lyon-Turin railway project, serving in various public roles over the years, promoting dialogue and exchange among territories, and the Italian, French and European institutions.

Graduated in Architecture from the Polytechnic of Turin in 1969, during his career he has worked in the fields of architecture, town planning and transport, taking part in the Comité de Transport Public des Communautés Européennes and the International Association of Public Transport, among others.

He was decorated with the French Legion of Honour in 2009. In 2013, the Chamber of Commerce of Turin awarded him the prize of Turin citizen of the year 2012 and the President of the Italian Republic awarded him the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit.

He is the author of several books, including: Autostrade e Territorio (pub. Il Sole 24 Ore), Parole sulla Strada (pub. Daniela Piazza), Turin Health Park, Architettura (pub. Testo & Immagine).

A convinced pro-European, his vision and commitment to building a modern rail link across the Alps made this project a reality. He passed away in Turin at the end of June 2023.
